The phrase South-West (or North-West, North-East, and South-East) all mean 45 degrees. In every-day speech, these phrases mean anywhere in a particular quadrant, but technically they mean 45 degrees.

how did you know the first angle is 45 degrees?

Hi dorfte,

Thank you very much for your request. Yes, this is definitely something I'd like to do as the component method is excellent. At the moment I'm unfortunately away from my recording equipment since I've traveling for the summer. I'll get to this at the beginning of September. This might not be soon enough for you, so in the mean time I suggest the following:
Watch http://www.giancolianswers.com/giancoli-physics-6th-edition-solutions/c… first to see how to calculate components of a vector, and then
http://www.giancolianswers.com/giancoli-physics-6th-edition-solutions/c… might be helpful with seeing how to combine the components into a resultant.

This video http://www.giancolianswers.com/giancoli-physics-6th-edition-solutions/c… goes start to finish with finding components, then combining into a resultant, and it's a bit more advanced with three vectors instead of two.

Best of luck with your studies.

would you please demonstrate the component method, this is the one taught by my prof.
Thank you
