Hi,
Why do we use the general velocity formula to find initial velocity rather than the 3rd kinematics equation used earlier to find the time? Couldn't we substitute 9.5m as the displacement and then solve for the initial velocity?

Hi arishenryl, I'm not entirely sure which formulae you're referring to, but the idea here is that we know how far horizontally the ball goes, so if we can find its time spent travelling we can then calculate vx=dxtv_\textrm{x} = \dfrac{d_\textrm{x}}{t}.
