Why is it positive above the x axis? Im more of a conceptual type of person.

This is just a math convention that "people" have agreed upon. Angles are positive counterclockwise starting from the x-axis, and negative going clockwise from the x-axis. An angle giving according to this convention is said to be in "Standard Position", which is a term you'll also come across in the trigonometry unit in mathematics class.
