This is Giancoli Answers with Mr. Dychko. Since the tension exerted by the rope is the only horizontal force here, that makes it equal to the net force and so it is ma. And the mass of the car is 1210 kilograms multiplied by the acceleration 1.2 m/s squared, gives a tension force of 1,450 Newtons.
