Problem 24
Q

Consider the network of resistors shown in Fig. 19–52. Answer qualitatively:

  1. What happens to the voltage across each resistor when the switch S is closed?
  2. What happens to the current through each when the switch is closed?
  3. What happens to the power output of the battery when the switch is closed?
  4. Let R1=R2=R3=R4=155  ΩR_1 = R_2 = R_3 = R_4 = 155 \; \Omega and V = 22.0 V. Determine the current through each resistor before and after closing the switch. Are your qualitative predictions confirmed?

A
  1. V1 increases, V3 and V4 decrease, V2 increases.V_1 \textrm{ increases, } V_3 \textrm{ and } V_4 \textrm{ decrease, } V_2 \textrm{ increases.}
  2. I1 increases, I3 and I4 decrease, I2 increases.I_1 \textrm{ increases, } I_3 \textrm{ and } I_4 \textrm{ decrease, } I_2 \textrm{ increases.}
  3. Power increases
  4.  Before: I1=94.6 mA, I2=0,I3 and I4=47.3 mA\textrm{ Before: }I_1 = 94.6 \textrm{ mA, } I_2 = 0, I_3 \textrm{ and } I_4 = 47.3 \textrm{ mA}
    After: I1=106 mA, I2=I3=I4=35.5 mA\textrm{After: }I_1 = 106 \textrm{ mA, } I_2 = I_3 = I_4 = 35.5 \textrm{ mA}
