Problem 51
Q

A particular string resonates in four loops at a frequency of 240 Hz. Give at least three other frequencies at which it will resonate. What is each called?

A
f1=60 Hz, f2=120 Hz, f3=180 Hzf_1 = 60 \textrm{ Hz, } f_2 = 120 \textrm{ Hz, } f_3 = 180 \textrm{ Hz}

VIDEO TRANSCRIPT

This is Giancoli Answers with Mr. Dychko. When a string resonates with 4 loops, that means that there are 4 antinodes. And the picture is like this. And that's the case where you have the frequency is four times the fundamental. The fundamental would have only one loop from here to here like this. Or I guess, I'll draw it on the same picture, fundamental looks like this with one antinode. And number of antinodes corresponds to this integer here they're multiplying by the fundamental. So, we can figure out the fundamental by dividing this frequency we're given by 4. So, 600 or, sorry, 60 hertz will be the fundamental right frequency. And other resonant frequencies are integer multiples of this fundamental. So, we have 2 times 60 is 120. And then the third harmonic is 3 times 60 which is 180 hertz.
