This is Giancoli Answers with Mr. Dychko. Gravitational potential energy equals the weight of the object multiplied by the height above some reference level and we'll assume the reference level is the ground. And it's 4 meters up and so the pole vaulter is 54 kilograms times 9.8 newtons per kilograms times 4 meters, which is, 2100 joules of gravitational potential energy.
